A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE MR. LEE KUAN YEW
(1923-2015)
For the past few days, the attributes, adulation, admiration and adoration for the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew have not only been exceptional but overwhelming. No world leader or politician, in this century, has ever received such respect and honor within its own country and abroad than what we are witnessing today for the founding father of modern Singapore.
We, an informal Alumni Group, of colleagues who have worked in AIA (American International Assurance Co. Ltd.) and AIG (American International Group) would like, as a small gesture, to pay tribute to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the Master Architect and Builder of Singapore.
We represent a diverse group, ranging from the "Pioneer" to the "Y" generation of Singapore. Some have retired while others are still active in the various financial and industrial sectors in Singapore and overseas.
Below are some of the personal thoughts and comments from our colleagues:
Cynthia Ng, former Senior VP, Learning & Development, HSBC Ltd.:
I am one of the beneficiaries of his 'meritocracy' legacy. I left my birth country at age 27 because I was totally disillusioned with its politics, ethnic and gender discrimination, which I personally experienced. I came to Singapore with very little, except big ambitions and hope and in the 28 years living and working in Singapore, I have been very blessed by this meritocratic society and am very proud to call Singapore my home.
Although we know his passing is inevitable but it is still difficult to accept that he is truly gone. It is hard to hold back my tears. For a man who has given up his entire life for Singapore, I think he now deserves a good rest. May he rest in peace.

Kevin Chia, former General Manager, China North Region, AXA Minmetals Assurance Co Ltd.:
I just flew back today on hearing the sad news of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's passing. In China, he is extremely well remembered! The media covered his news and life and contributions rather extensively.
The Lee Kuan Yew I knew is quite different from what some western media criticized him to be. In my correspondences with him, he was very personal, polite and actually listened. He even asked me permission to let him share my thoughts with the cabinet! How unpresumptuous he was. Very unlike what the western media portray him to be.
In China he really put Singapore to the forefront. I received preferential treatment from the authorities, just because I am Singaporean. When I first went to Shanghai, the media even interviewed me about my feelings in China and were curious about how we Singaporeans celebrate Chinese New Year in Singapore!
The greatest honor they gave me was to invite me to talk in Beida and Fudan! Sometimes I laugh to myself. There was once when I had dinner with the Chairman of the insurance commission and he had just met PM Lee Hsien Loong the day before. He sat next to me and when he found out that I was Singaporean, we hit it off like old friends. Without Lee Kuan Yew, I really don't know how my life in China would have been!

Jenny Wong, Executive VP, Global HR Head, United Overseas Bank Ltd.:
I feel privileged and grateful to have the late Mr. Lee Kwan Yew as our founding father of Singapore. A man of great vision , driven by deep passion and commitment. He transformed Singapore both culturally and physically into a place we are all proud to live in, and call ourselves Singaporeans.
I lived in the era where he governed as our first Prime Minister, then Senior Minister, to Minister Mentor. I have the privilege to see him made the significant changes to home ownership, education for all, national service, programs to help women get back to the workforce and creation of a clean, safe, garden city state….. His devotion to this country and his people cannot be understated. So I can truly feel the loss of a great leader. May he rest in peace, his legacy lives on.

For all that you have done for Singapore and its people, “Thank You “ is not enough . You gave us hope with your convictions and resolve and today all of us are proud to call ourselves Singaporeans.

What else can I say to our legendary honorable statesman and founding father of modern Singapore? Having born and lived in Singapore since the mid 1950s, I have witnessed the transformation of Singapore under the able and strong leadership of our first Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. I will not be what I am today if not for this man of bold vision and his "dare to do" attitude to see a "successful Singapore" today after giving his whole life for Singapore.
I learnt three recurring attributes from this great man:
His competency and charisma to execute his vision for Singapore with an able team
His commitment to Singapore all his life
His character of integrity, persistence and focus to accomplish his vision

To be able to bring Singapore from where it was to where it is now, this alone made the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew an extraordinary leader. A man to be respected!

You are truly a remarkable man to be honored by all Singaporeans. My heart aches on your passing and I am already feeling your loss. Thank you for putting us first before yourself and creating a beautiful green and clean city for our generation and our children's generation to be proud of. I am truly touched by your love story, especially your loyalty and love to Mrs Lee right to her passing on. You are an exemplary husband and father for many male Singaporeans to follow. You are my Hero and there is none like you.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart Mr. Lee. I am so proud to be a Singaporean because of you. May your soul Rest In Peace. We love you

As you know I wasn't born and raised in Singapore but I had the privilege to experience 4 years of the "Prime Ministership" of the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. His passing left me with a feeling of ambivalence. Sad and at the same time happy for him who has lived such a long & exceptional life. In such a time, one can't help but pause and reflect.
In leading a family, leading a department, leading a company, leading a country, what differentiates one leader from another? Personally, the answer lies in "Who is your guiding light & force?" So while the focus is and will, for a long time be on Mr. Lee's achievements, the question is: "We, who inherited and are still benefiting, how are we living his achievements?”
I hope that we don't let ourselves be blinded by the bright city lights of a busy metropolis. Each & every one of us should know our mission and the greater purpose in our lives.
Sajan Raman, former VP Brunei Operations, AIA Singapore:
Thank you Mr Lee for giving us a wonderful country to live in - a place I am proud to call home.
Desmond Yong, former Senior VP, AIA Co. Ltd.; Director, IBS Reinsurance Broker (S) Pte. Ltd.; Director of Able Pack(S) Pte.Ltd.:
Mr. Lee Kuan Yew should be honored as the 'National Father of Singapore ' instead of the 'Founder Prime Minister '. His photo should be display in all government departments and statutory boards. .His contribution to this country is far beyond description. The display of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's photo in all these buildings , will not only ensure that people remember this great man but also inspire the people to contribute positively to the future success of the country by setting the high standard of leadership!
Tay Cheng Heng, former VP & Regional Comptroller, AIA Singapore:
My parents and four siblings grew up in the late 50's in a one room rented prewar house in Kee Seng Street (off Tanjong Pagar Road), an area notorious for secret society gang fights and illegal gambling. The room was no bigger than a one-room HDB flat. There was common kitchen, bathroom and toilet at the back of the house. There was no modern sanitation. We used candle light to go to the toilet. We had to hold our breath when the night soil man comes round to collect our daily "business". We had mostly Indian neighbours staying along the same street. I remembered that during the racial riots in 1964, we experienced Chinese gangsters throwing empty glass bottles from the hilltop right into the front of our neighbour's houses. We had to close the main door or risk getting injured and could hear the breaking of glasses outside.
In late 1964, we were fortunate enough to be allotted a two-bedroom HDB rental flat in Cantonment Road (the first two blocks of HDB rental flats in Tanjong Pagar Constituency). These two rental blocks have since been torn down and in its place is Pinnacle@Duxton (currently the most expensive HDB flat in Singapore).
We moved out of Tanjong Pagar in 1978, and over the years, my siblings and I started our own family and all of us are either staying in our own HDB flat or private apartment. We now have clean drinking water from the tap, modern sanitation, highly subsidized education, good healthcare facilities, employment opportunities, no blackouts, convenient public transportation, safe environment, etc. All these would not have been possible if we did not have Mr. Lee Kuan Yew and his Old Guard constantly working to improve our lives.
Our late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew has done the best that he can. The rest is up to us. May he Rest in Peace."
Hwang Liang Tso, former VP Agency. AIA Singapore:
I admire our founding father, the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew on his determination to solve our nation’s ”Water" dependence from Malaysia
Mack Eng, Country President, ACE Insurance Limited:
As a Singaporean who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s, slums, crime and poverty was a common sight. Witnessing firsthand the evolution of our city-state to what it has become today; where skyscrapers and modern living is the norm, Singaporeans have a lot to be thankful for to our pioneer leaders and generation.

So much had been said about Mr. Lee and his achievements; we have been most fortunate to have great leaders like Mr. Lee who took on and overcome insurmountable odds to make a success story out of this Little Red Dot. May his vision and indomitable spirit be a reminder of how every Singaporean must live and continue living to secure the future for our country and families. Thank you, Mr. Lee.
Michael Foo, Training Manager, AIA Co. Ltd:
Mr. Lee Kuan Yew had left behind a first world nation. His contributions to Singapore were enormous ... every Singaporean is proud of. The next challenge is how our existing and future leaders will sustain such progress and growth with demographic challenges ahead.
Charlie Lau, former Regional AIG Auditor, Hong Kong:
It was with the greatest sadness that we learned of the passing of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. I know that many weeks of illness and the mental effort to face the inevitable, still cannot have prepared you and the nation for the pain we now must feel.
I personally feel greatly indebted to Mr Lee for the sacrifices he'd made for the nation. He was a great leader of all times, a responsible father, a loving husband and grandfather....so much has already been said by the people from all walks of life, the media, foreign dignitaries etc. over the past few days. But words could never be enough to say how much we feel and miss our beloved Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.
I was in Primary One and Two then, and didn't quite understand why we had to sing 'Negara Ku' during flag raising, but now I know. Being part of the Federation was deemed the only way out for Singapore to survive, a country not blessed with water, oil, minerals or agricultural commodities. But it was not to be....and the rest is history.

God had given Mr. Lee the wisdom to govern Singapore and to lead her to where it is today. With due respect it was more than an economic miracle by human efforts; I believe we were favoured by the Lord Almighty who has blessed Singapore with success and allowed no weapons formed against us to prosper. We are the beneficiary of the Abraham Covenant.
While we mourn the loss of our founding father and prime minister, let's not forget the source of all goodness and give thanks to God for blessing Singapore with LEE KUAN YEW.
Pauline Toh, former Executive Office, AIA Singapore, now residing in Canada:
Though my family and I are many thousands of miles away, we are still Singaporeans and mourn our founding father's passing with the same degree of pain as those living in our homeland. With a heavy heart we bid him fare thee well. May God guide and protect you, Mr. Lee, on your journey HOME.
Anna Ho, former VP Group, AIA Hong Kong:
The late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew is making front pages and headlines, which are full of praises, in our local newspapers as well. Politicians all over the world must be envious of how he is loved by his countrymen.
My condolences to all Singaporeans for the loss of their founding father!
Catherine Yu, former Executive Office, AIA Hong Kong:
May I first convey my deepest heartfelt condolences to the Singaporeans for the loss of your late Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

During my recent one week stay in Singapore, I have noticed how the Singaporeans behave. In general, you are very polite, helpful and knowledgeable, irrespective of the level of education or job status. This is what I call "excellent HOME education", an achievement by the Founder of Singapore, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew who deserved so much respect from his people.
I am very impressed with the efficiency, modern design, technology and cleanliness of the public transport in Singapore. The bus system provides a convenient and efficient service. Well, all in all, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew is like a father to every Singaporean. He had taken care of his children in every aspect.
Vincent Kwo, Chief Executive Officer, Gibraltar BSN Life Berhad, Malaysia:
I recalled the first time I saw Mr. Lee Kuan Yew in person was in 1984, the year I started my working life with AIA Singapore. It was at the election rally in Fullerton Square during the lunch hour in Dec 1984 and the whole place was packed with the lunch crowd. I managed to google the speech. Mr. Lee was then 60 and he was talking about grooming the next generation of leaders.
Mr. Lee was such a great leader of our time, his determination and hard work have made Singapore what it is today. I think his legacy is also his determination to carefully select and groom his next group of leaders who can take over from him and continue to make Singapore better than what he had done. Mr. Lee was a true leader and May his soul rest in peace and May Singapore continue to be the world's admiration.
Peter Lin, former President, Asian Operations, Liberty Mutual Group; Senior Pastor, Queenstown Baptist Church, Singapore

Many young people felt today - “I don’t care how great you are, until I know how much you care.” One of the ministers said beyond Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's vision, drive, and intellect - what distinguishes him most from many leaders is that “he cared”. I remember during my first stay in Singapore in 1990s, Mr. Lee showed how much he cared for his nation. At the peak of his achievements, he did what I thought was not possible, he stepped down and passed the baton to Mr Goh showing that he cared more for his country than his own attainment of power.
This contemporary leader reminds me of another during this season of Lent (40 days leading to Easter) - the Lord Jesus Christ. The bible said “he cared” so much that even though "He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity”. And because of His “ caring", we have Good Friday and Easter Sunday that have stood the test of time.
Mr. Lee, for the way you have cared for your country, I wish that you will stay in the hearts of your people through the corridors of time.
The above personal comments capture the essence of the moment of a glimpse in the past of our journey in life in Singapore! Lives that have been touched for the better will resonate with a heart of appreciation and thankfulness.
History has been made! What is important and critical is what happens in the future. The foundation has been set and nation building has reached a first world status. Singapore's future lies with the current and future generation leaders, together with the people of Singapore, to continue to adapt and take bold steps as we face a complex and uncertain future.
