Dear Colleagues & Friends,

Alumni for Life is an informal group created for individuals who share a common thread – we have all worked in or currently still working in AIA or AIG group. We have all travelled in the insurance road and as we continue in our journey, life takes on a broader dimension and perspective.

The purpose of the informal group is to provide a platform for communication and network. It can also be a reference station for precious memories of times together. Colleagues who have contributed in sharing their experiences, thoughts, insights and wisdom will undoubtedly provide some elements of encouragement, inspiration and motivation to colleagues and friends.

For a start, the blog contains the introduction and a post on “A Tribute to the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore.

Happy Memories and Reading!

Disruptions

In the latest Singapore National Day speech, the Prime Minister Lee stated that "it is disruption that will become the defining challenge for Singapore's economy".  During his speech, he was disrupted by his ill health and had to rest before he resumed his speech.  This sudden disruption cause temporary anxiety and concern!   A sigh of relief was felt when DPM Teo announced that PM Lee will resume his speech.
All over  the world, this is the latest buzz word!  We hear it in the business circle, the political arena, over social media and even family affairs!

The volcano eruption is a good example of disruption!  Although destructive in nature,  it provides some benefits in its aftermath - creating fertile soil, valuable minerals for commercial use and even new islands for habitation!  Where there are disruptions, there are also opportunities beside challenges
.
Disruptions affect our status quo, alter our boundaries, change our perceptions, and even challenge our values and beliefs!  Many of us face constant disruptions in family affairs, social disconnects, financial setbacks or health issues.  When disruptions occur, we are forced to re-evaluate our position and think of solutions.   It is a time to reflect on who we are?  What we are?  What can be done?

Disruptions not only are defining challenges for Singapore's economy, but on the individual level, they will test our individual resilience and resourcefulness to overcome any obstacles or barriers that will confront us.
"Change" seems to be the key that unlocks the resultant effects of disruptions - change in technology; change in leadership or management styles; change in strategic thinking: change in mindset and perspective, etc..!  Basically a change in the direction, method or thinking which we are so accustomed to.

Be prepared for changes in this disruptive world.  Expect the unexpected and the unexpected will be less disruptive!

IONs of Extraordinary Achievements

Through the ions of time, many theories and principles on achieving excellence have been expounded by experts and professionals.  Let me share my personal perspective on the basic essentials of attaining extraordinary results.  I call it the "ION's of Achievement"!  Nothing new or profound but simply presented in a nutshell that can be easily assimilated and recalled.

The 3 IONs that result in extraordinary achievements:
  • VisION
  • PassION
  • AcION
VisION - ability to see the big picture in the mind.  It is the beginning and the guiding force.
PassION - the fire that ignites and propels the human spirit towards the vision.  It adds colour and vibrancy to the picture.
ActION - the vision and passion are translated into tangible actions. The painting of the picture - cleverly crafted actions that transform the vision into reality.

The 3 IONs Involves the combination of mind, spirit and body!

The above IONs components are found in all results-oriented individuals.  The latest example can be found in the extraordinary achievement of Joseph Schooling - the first Singaporean to attained a gold medal in Olympics, even breaking the game's record.

Summary:  The VisION is the starting point and guiding force; PassION is the propelling force; and ActION is the execution force that brings the "IONs" components together for a possible extraordinary achievement.  When you cast your Vision,  ignite your Passion and realized your dreams through your unwavering Action.

Lesson from PM Lee's Wishes

A lively recent discussion at the Lee Kuan Yew Prize Award Ceremony, part of the World Cities Summit.  PM Lee was asked a very interesting question at the dialogue:  "If God appeared before you and asked for 3 things that you would want for Singapore,  what would those be?"   PM Lee replied that it was not something he had ever thought about.   But if it did happen, he would wish that "Singapore be blessed with the desire to be dissatisfied with where we are and want to do better,  and yet the wisdom to count our blessings."

Let me comment on PM Lee's response.  The first part of his reply embodied the spirit of striving.  Always to do better, as remaining in the same position is not an option.  As the world progresses, keeping pace is to be left behind!  Progress and progression are to be calibrated and accelerated to keep ahead.
The second part of his reply reflects a spirit of contentment!   "Wisdom to count our blessings" - the ability to be thankful irrespective of the outcome.  Failures and disappointments are part of human experiences!   They provide the necessary ingredients for breakthroughs and discoveries.   It has been said that contentment is great gain.  But never rest on your laurels!

Interestingly, if God would ask you what 3 things you want in life, what will be your answer?  Just analyse your 3 wishes and you will discover that they will not fully satisfy your cravings or desires!  I can assure you that there will always be a missing element!  The most popular wants would fall into 3 broad categories of either fame, fortune or health.  Ironically, all the wants are temporary or transient in nature.  All wishes and achievements will vanish on expiry date!  Perhaps if you managed to pass on to your trusted beneficiaries, your legacy may stretch a little longer.

My parting words: Strive always to do your best but remember to be contented as you count your blessings !  Life is short, stay connected and plan to attend our next Reunion Gathering in 2017.  This will be a special occasion when we celebrate our 5th Anniversary (2012-2017).
